Violet Grohl, Kim Gordon, St. Vincent, and Joan Jett Slay Nirvana Reunion Set at FireAid
I’m a Gen X mom, so I was ecstatic when I learned of Nirvana’s surprise reunion at Thursday’s FireAid benefit concert, for a set that featured Violet Grohl plus three badass female rock icons on lead vocals.
Backed by Nirvana legacy members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, St. Vincent kicked things off with “Breed,” followed by Kim Gordon on “School.” Joan Jett came up next, slinging her guitar and singing a brilliantly messy version of “Territorial Pissings.” Her set would have been the best part of the night. But then 18-year-old Violet Grohl, Dave’s eldest daughter, took the stage to belt out a heartfelt, throaty rendition of “All Apologies” (while Gordon played bass!).
Violet is an absolute force of nature — I couldn’t believe this was the same 12-year-old kid I saw singing backup at a Foo Fighters concert in 2017!
And kudos to Grohl and the other Nirvana members for having an all-woman guest vocalist set.

The five-hour concert also featured performances from Lady Gaga (with a new song penned for the concert), Stevie Nicks, Katy Perry, Joni Mitchell, Rod Stewart, Olivia Rodrigo, Sting, Stevie Wonder, and more.
There were other unforgettable moments, too, like when Green Day teamed up with Billie Eilish for “Last Night on Earth,” and P!nk sung a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m gonna leave you.”
We wish we were there! The only thing that would have made the night even better would have been a surprise appearance by Courtney Love. If anyone could sing Cobain’s vocals with conviction, it’s her.
