Rok-Lok Guitar Strap Lock: A Review
The first and only time in my 20 years of playing guitar that I attached strap locks to a guitar was a bit chaotic, from what I remember. I opened a package, rummaged through a bunch of metal parts, and then begged a friend to attach my strap for me.
That strap, which is now affixed to my Stratocaster, has not come off since. It’s a pity, since it’s such a cute strap. But I do love the benefit of not having a guitar strap that falls off as I’m attempting a guitar solo!
So I was delighted when my son Nathan’s friend’s dad told me about the Rok-Lok guitar strap locks. I’d just click and go! Attach a single strap to multiple guitars with ease! Remove said strap when done!
I was stoked.
Here’s how my test run went:
WHAT I LOVE
Once I opened the Rok-Lok box, putting together the strap lock was a cinch — it took me five minutes to find an online tutorial that guided me through the steps (yes, I am the kind of person who needs these!). Snapping it on was easy. No tech skills needed (or tools). Just unscrew the two attached pieces, and then screw them onto your strap (with your hand, not a screwdriver).
They’re also pretty affordable — $20 for a single set and $34 for a bundle, via Rok-Lok’s website or Amazon. Take a look at this demo from a Rok-Lok reviewer. While I’m wary of promotions, this video is 100% accurate in reflecting how easy it is to attach these things to a guitar.
POSSIBLE ISSUE?
There’s not a lot wrong with this cute guitar strap lock — especially when compared with my old metal strap locks that I haven’t figured out how to remove from my Stratocaster. In fact, I plan to buy another set (besides this free set I procured, for the purpose of this review).
But one video reviewer highlighted the potential issue of the strap locks rubbing against the guitar and ruining the paint/finish. This initially made me afraid of using my new Rok-Lock with my super expensive guitars (ahem, that ES-335).
Fortunately, when I put my acoustic guitar on and jumped around, there was zero friction, so I plan to use the next pair I buy on my electric. Also, if the friction issue becomes a thing, the reviewer recommends using Ernie Ball silicone washers (in lieu of the optional rubber adhesive that comes with the Rok-Lok set).
WOULD I BUY AGAIN?
Of course! It’s really a no-brainer to use these strap locks. If I change my mind in six months, I’ll let you know. But for now, and possibly forever, the Rok-Lok guitar strap locks is a winning product that simplifies my life as a performing guitarist.
