N.J. All-Mom Band Mamadrama to Release ‘Momsplain’ Just in Time for Mother’s Day
As a mom of tweens, I feel like I’ve turned into a constant nag – “Clean your room!” “Don’t make me ask you twice!” “Fold the laundry!” – at home. The six moms of the New Jersey band Mamadrama completely get it — in more ways than one.
That’s why their new single ‘Momsplain,’ out on Mother’s Day (May 12th), feels like it was written for me. The two-and-a-half-minute single offers a hilarious take on “mansplaining” from a mom’s point of view: It’s a driving, ferocious rock n’ roll tune with a ‘90s, NYC-punk vibe that begs for repeat listens! The singalong chorus with its gang-style vocals — “Say What? Momsplain!” — is best cranked up in the car (or during those road trips to travel sports events hours from home).
We recently caught up with the band’s guitarist Carey Balogh to talk about the single, the band’s new drummer (fellow mom Lisa English), and what’s next for the six-piece band! (Click here to pre-save ‘Momsplain’ and follow Mamadrama on Spotify.)
Our Questions for Mamadrama’s Guitar Maven
Rockmommy: We love ‘Momsplain!’ How did you come up with the music and lyrics?
Carey Balogh: Our lead singer Beth [Herbruck] started writing the lyrics based on the push-and-pull of parenthood: the stress and high emotions, unmet expectations, and especially parenting in the tween/teen years when it feels like you’re setting new rules that are being challenged daily.
We felt like the mom version of “mansplaining” needed to be high-energy, sound super confident and feel punk as hell. It’s like a mosh-pit-for-moms moment.
Rockmommy: You have a new mom in the band, on drums! How did you find her? Also, is having six moms in one band some kind of record?
Carey Balogh: Our new mom drummer is Lisa English and we’re thrilled to be a party of six! Ironically, Lisa was at our very first Mamadrama gig over five years ago. As a local well known real estate broker, we knew “of” her and she was in another band for years. Over the past year Lisa would go into Renee’s restaurant Jus and ask about our band, hinting that if we ever needed a drummer she’d love to be considered.
The stars aligned and the timing was right — we’ve always wanted to be an all-mom band and we’re in such an exciting place right now. To our knowledge we don’t know of any bands with six moms recording and playing original music. It might be a record for the Guinness Book!

Rockmommy: What’s in store for Mamadrama this summer?
Carey Balogh: We have so many balls up in the air! We’re releasing two more songs we’ve already recorded (Salty and Side Bush). We’re also playing the iconic Wonder Bar in Asbury Park on July 15th. Plus, we have three more original songs in the works and everyone in the band is feeling super inspired to write more and more over the summer.
