03 Jul My Top 10 Favorite Elle King Songs in Honor of Her 7/3 Birthday
Rock n’ country artist — and mom — Elle King’s made a big name for herself in the 8 years since “Ex’s and Oh’s” dropped. And today, the vocal powerhouse is as ballsy and gritty as the best of them — and a total girl’s girl. Her songs are expansive, sex-positive and just totally fun, beloved by preppy sorority sisters and Brooklyn hipsters alike.

So in honor of her July 3rd birthday — she turns 34! — here are my top 10 favorite Elle King songs (and their respective albums).
#10: “AMERICA’S SWEETHEART” (LOVE STUFF)
The lyrics, “I like the chip I got in my front teeth” get me every time. Love who you are, even if you’re not the girl next door. That’s what this song is all about.
#9: “GOOD GIRLS” (GHOSTBUSTERS 2016 SOUNDTRACK)
This one’s a fun, sexy romp and a highlight of the Ghostbusters 2016 reboot’s soundtrack with a chorus that’s worthy of an action flick.
#8: “UNDER THE INFLUENCE” (LOVE STUFF)
EK soars in this ballad-ish tune, the second single off her debut album, swooning with the chorus, “under the influence/I’ve got no defense/It might be criminal, but still I just can’t quit.” It’s one of my favorite songs about addiction to love and other things.
#7: “DRUNK AND I DON’T WANNA GO HOME” (COME GET YOUR WIFE)
This duet with Miranda Lambert is a fun, rollicking girls’ weekend tune, and my favorite on her 2023 country record, Come Get Your Wife.
#6: “KOCAINE KAROLINA” (LOVE STUFF)
This underdog of a tune is sweet, with a bit of banjo and southern swamp vibes.
#5: “WHERE THE DEVIL DON’T GO” (LOVE STUFF)
The lead off tune from Love Stuff is a good one, fusing rockabilly and psychedelic sounds into one mean, lean song.
#4: “THE LET GO” (IN ISOLATION)
Elle King’s 2020 EP In Isolation features three heart wrenching singles that mirrored our collective aching for community. This one is my favorite.
#3: “MY NECK MY BACK” (SINGLE)
This song is so dirty that I can’t play it in front of my kids. So, naturally, I crank this up when I’m alone on a road trip in my car. It’s like Beyonce’s “Single Ladies,” only X rated.
#2: “SHAME” (SHAKE THE SPIRIT)
Elle gets totally witchy on this one from her 2018 album, with lyrics that beckon, a swampy vintage sound, and a chorus made for singing along.
#1: “EX’S AND OH’S” (LOVE STUFF)
There are so many things I love about this song — the storytelling about what happens to lovers tossed aside, the catchy melodies, the delivery — that it’s hard to pinpoint just one.
